MESS

Hi friends.

Before starting, I would like to thank my friend Pranjal Jain for being a contributor in my our blog. He is managing all the technical stuff of the blog. So the new font and different format of comment box and other such things you see, all credit goes to him.

So, after sharing my experience of hostel life, I would like to tell you about my experience at mess of our hostel. This has been my worst experience at IITKGP. Food in our mess is even worse than what I expected from a mess of a decent college (I expected extremely bad food; after all, IIT is a govt. college; but the mess proved that govt. things can be much more worse than we can ever expect.) Eating mess food everyday is an extremely difficult task as food is really very bad in taste.

People say that try to focus on positive aspect of everything. But mess food has no positive aspect at all. There is a great variety visible whenever I see my mess menu, but everything has almost the same taste.....bad.....extremely bad.

MESS MENU OF LBS HALL FOR OCTOBER

The above pic shows the complete menu (apologies for the bad quality of the pic). Though the menu seems to be brilliant, but believe me; only a superhero can eat for continuous 7 days in the mess. Pickle served is too sour, it seems like consuming vinegar directly. I would like to mention that snacks served are still decent in taste; samosa, chowmein, bread pakoda and sometimes Dark Fantasy as biscuits (yummyyyyy).

Everyday, bread-butter-jam-banana-egg is available in breakfast while rice-dal-sambhar-roti is available in lunch and dinner. But it is difficult to identify what am I eating because every vegetable seems to be same in taste!! (many a times it has happened that in the middle of dinner, I have checked mess menu to know what I am eating!). And this is the sole reason that everyone has developed a habit of eating in a restaurant or canteen quite frequently. There are a number of restaurants and canteens within campus itself (over 20!!) which includes CCD and Subway as well (and rates which are 50% subsidized are so amazing for us) while some restaurants outside the campus (including dominos) are a relief for everyone.

In the end, I would like to say that no matter what type of food anyone has eaten in his life, IIT mess will prove to be the worst; and that's for sure. You will enjoy each and everything of IITs, but you will hate mess as it makes you feel that you are in hell each time you eat something in it.

MESS, LBS HALL

Goodbye.

HOSTEL LIFE

Hi friends.

First of all, I would like to thank my friend for giving me the confidence to continue blogging,(thanks a lot yaar), though my friend doesn't allow me to say thanks at all, believing that friends do not need to say thanks to each other. So finally here I am, writing my second post, sharing my experience about hostel of my college.

Some of you may have a question that why I chose to write about hostels at the very beginning of the description of my experience. Well, the answer to that is quite simple, as hostels are the place which we encounter first after coming to college. Also, we spend most of the time here (to be honest, this is the case only with first years as most of the seniors 'visit' hostel only to sleep at night).

Talking of my experience, I felt like leaving the college as soon as I visited my hostel. At IITKGP, all facchas (local word referring to first year students) are allotted LBS (Lal Bahadur Shahstri) Hall of residence in which every room is shared by 3. When I entered my room, it was as dirty as it could be, with spider webs all over. Rooms seemed small sized and the wardrobes were not having any doors to it!! My first question was that how can the authorities do that to us!! (honestly, I was reacting as if they had done a big crime and we 'innocent' were being punished for it). I still remember that I said to my father "Papa, ye kis nark mein aa gaye hum, chalo apne ghar waapas chalte hain" (I think I have exaggerated a bit). Moreover, there are no coolers or a.c. in our rooms. Just imagine the situation in summers with slow working fans and nothing else!!

But time and necessity forces you to adjust to all type of situations. The same applies to me as well, so I have now become used to all this and instead of thinking about the negative points, I enjoy the positive aspects of hostel life. Yes, the positive points of hostel make life enjoyable. High speed WiFi (not too high speed, but still much better than that assured by our favorite BSNL or Airtel or Idea or other such companies), great LAN speed and unlimited access to it makes us enjoy everything on internet. Just for an example, I watched India vs South Africa T20 match yesterday on start sports website which gives facility of live streaming in good quality (felt very bad that India lost). Buffering 1080p videos on YouTube is a myth at IIT. Apart from the internet, people spend their complete day playing Counter Strike and Fifa using LAN ports (I tell you, these games are a big addiction). Students sleeping at 2 or 3 o clock is totally normal (this is a big change for a guy like me who used to sleep at 12 o clock). Some of the unexpected experiences I had include listening to the sound of washing machine at 1 o clock in the night, 6-7 people sleeping in a room not big enough even for 3 (I am still unable to understand how is that managed, but it's great!), students going at 12 midnight to a helipad at least 5 km away, on cycle, watching movies till 6 in the morning! But all this is extremely enjoyable with friends.

To sum up my 2 months experience in my hostel, I would like to say that though there are so many problems, still I enjoy my hostel life to its very best and all this happens due to craziness of hostel and my great friends (all of them as crazy as me, which doubles up the fun).

So guys, I have to go now as I have to prepare for my maths test tomorrow (Imagine, Class Test on Sunday!!! Professors ko koi aur din nahi mila!). Wish me luck.

Goodbye.
